All Hallow's Ecommerce

Happy Halloween Everyone!

Whether you're having a quiet night in with the bowl of "trick or treating" sweets or you're donning a silly costume and heading off to a party, Halloween 2013 has set some high expectations. We are estimated to spend over £325 million this year on all Halloween related goodies, such as costumes, decorations and, most importantly, confectionery.

In 2010, Amazon expressed that themed Halloween items have “clawed and crept” their way into the top 20 bestsellers in the Toys & Games category. As well as Amazon.co.uk, Asda, M&S, Greggs and Tesco have all jumped on the bandwagon to create spooky snacks and themed products to boost their holiday sales, including “spooky snowballs”, “freaky fairycakes” and recipes for “frogspawn punch”. Cadbury’s have even turned their biggest Easter promotion into a Halloween campaign with “Cadbury’s Screme Eggs”.

22% of people in the UK will dress up to celebrate Halloween by trick or treating, heading off to parties or just to the streets to cause mayhem. This year, you're very likely to come across teams of zombies, 2013's most popular costume. Last year, fancy dress store "Angels" saw people queuing outside their London store for up to two hours just to get inside and browse. As time goes by, more and more people in the UK are getting excited for Halloween, going to great lengths to decorate their houses and buy the most original costumes. Angels' online sales in 2012 were up 50%, proof that people today love the spooky holiday and are willing to pay to join in.

Thousands of children will flood the streets of Britain tonight, parents in tow, all looking to hammer your door down and steal your snacks! So you have two options:

1) Indulge All Hallow's Eve; splash your cash on an incredible costume, decorate your house (or just forego the dusting for a few weeks) and invite your friends over to party the night away or watch classic horror movies made just for Halloween Night or

2) Turn the lights off, ignore the doorbell, pretend you're not home and fume quietly in the dark about how much fun everyone else is having and how annoying it is.

Either way, enjoy your evening; Halloween only comes once a year!

In Cyberspace, No-one Can Hear You Scream...

Picture
Over 2.4billion people use the Internet on a daily basis, but not everyone knows just how dangerous the web can be…

A computer virus is a program that infects files on your computer or network server, and then makes copies of itself. Some can damage or completely destroy your files, while others may track web usage and record passwords or personal information. The more you know, the better prepared you’ll be if you do come down with a bad case of Spyware…

Brain (1986) - The first computer virus ever; non-destructive
Happy99 (1999) - The first virus to be spread via email; non-destructive, but hit millions of PCs
Love Letter (2000) -  The biggest virus ever; got into PCs via email and overwrote crucial files
Fizzer (2003) - The first virus designed to make money; forced PCs to send spam emails
Stuxnet (2010) - 1000% larger than the average computer worm; it is estimated that it took 10 years to develop and create and was used to impair the ability of a centrifuge to enrich uranium.

Viruses may seem big and nasty, but don’t forget to leave some concern for Hackers. A hacker is someone who seeks and exploits weaknesses in a computer system or computer network. Hackers may be motivated by a multitude of reasons, such as profit, protest, or challenge, meaning their next target could be you! Since the first technological hack in 1972, over $1trillion have been stolen in intellectual property. Below are some of the most impressive breaches in Hacking History:

Ian Murphy - hacked AT&T in 1981 to change the clocks to get round extortionate midday call charges; he was the first hacker to be convicted on felony charges.
Kevin Mitnick - the most wanted hacker in the US; he beat security defences at DEC, IBM & Pacific Bell. Prosecutors believed he was able to launch nuclear weapons just by whistling into a payphone
Gary McKinnon - hacked NASA, the US Army, Navy, Air Force and the Department of Defence causing $800,000 worth of security damages; his aim was to find evidence of a UFO cover up...
Albert Gonzalez - received the largest prison sentence for hacking in US history; he is currently serving 20 years in a federal prison for hacking 200 million credit and debit card numbers and causing $200 million of damages!

The best defence for the everyday user is to install anti-virus software and keep systems and applications current and updated. Run a virus scan before you open new applications that you have downloaded or installed from the internet. In addition to manual scans, install an “on access” scanner that will run checks whenever you start up your computer. In online forums and chat rooms, be careful when accepting files or clicking links and never share personal information there; stay wise to identity theft as it is easier to steal personal details online. Be sure to make back-up copies of important documents and files on a writable disk or an external hard drive.
